A brief bio

The inspiration for her drawings began in early childhood when she traveled with her family throughout several of the world's most remote landscapes, which were the subject of her mother's fine art photography. After her formal training at Skidmore college she now exhibit extensively in galleries and venues throughout the United States and overseas.

In addition to exhibitions, recent projects include a series of drawings that served as the set design for the classic ballet Giselle, which premiered in October 2012 at the Grand Theatre of Geneva, Switzerland (her drawings and performance photos here). Ten of her drawings were also used in the set design for House of Cards, a Netflix TV series directed by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey.

In August 2012 She led Chasing the Light, an expedition sailing up the NW coast of Greenland, retracing the 1869 journey of American painter William Bradford and documenting the rapidly changing arctic landscape. Continuing to address climate change in her works, She spent September 2013 in the Maldives, the lowest-lying country in the world, and arguably the most vulnerable to rising sea levels.

Israel

The Israel series was inspired by the coastline of Tel-Aviv. When I traveled there in 2009 I was fascinated with the waters of the Mediterranean, which were saturated with rich hues and were simultaneously transparent and luminous. I took on the enjoyable challenge of capturing this rich contrast, rendering the golden sand and its reflection in smooth pastel. The sea foam was created in layers to evoke the bubbly essence of a crashing wave.

Nosara

The seas are never still; from one moment to the next the composition changes entirely. I attempt to evoke this movement in my drawings. I think of water as a metaphor for life - constantly transforming, both fearsomely and beautifully. In Nosara, Costa Rica, I held my camera inches above the Pacific ocean to capture images of the bubbling, onrushing waves. When creating large-scale pastel drawings such as these, I draw on my memory of the experience, on the photos I have taken, and on inspiration from artists such as Clifford Ross and Robert Longo.

Greenland 2012: Chasing the Light

In August 2012, I led an Arctic expedition up the NW coast of Greenland. Called "Chasing the Light", it was the second expedition the mission of which was to create art inspired by this dramatic geography. The first, in 1869, was led by the American painter William Bradford. My mother, Rena Bass Forman, had conceived the idea for the voyage, but did not live to see it through. During the months of her illness her dedication to the expedition never wavered and I promised to carry out her final journey.

These drawings were inspired by this trip. Documenting climate change, the work addresses the concept of saying goodbye on scales both global and personal. In Greenland, I scattered my mother’s ashes amidst the melting ice.

I am deeply grateful for the team of talented artists and scholars and the Wanderbird captains and crew for helping me carry out my mother's wishes and realize her dream.
